Grade 2 (2nd grade) curriculum

These are the 21 grade-level skills CubbyEd teaches in 2nd grade: Math, English Language Arts, Science, Catholic Religion. Each one gets lessons, practice and mastery checks. Parents and teachers choose the subjects and track progress.

Math

• Read simple bar graphs
  Interpret bar graphs with up to four categories.

  Why it matters: Foundation for area/perimeter.

  Use cents notation; count mixed coins.
  Why it matters: Daily-life money fluency.

• Time to 5 minutes
  Read clocks to the nearest 5 minutes.
  Why it matters: Real-world numeracy.

• Add with regrouping
  Add two- and three-digit numbers with carrying.
  Why it matters: Builds multi-digit fluency.
  Operations · Standards: 2.NBT.B.7
• Subtract with regrouping
  Subtract multi-digit numbers with borrowing.
  Why it matters: Mirror of addition; needed for daily math.

• Place value to hundreds
  Understand 3-digit numbers as hundreds, tens, ones.
  Why it matters: Required for multi-digit operations.

English Language Arts

• Nouns, verbs, adjectives
  Identify the basic parts of speech.
  Why it matters: Grammar vocabulary basis.

• Commas in lists
  Use commas to separate items in a series.
  Why it matters: Most common comma rule.
  Punctuation · Standards: L.2.2b
• Topic + supporting sentences
  Write a paragraph with a topic sentence and details.

Science

• Properties and changes of matter
  Classify solids and liquids by observable properties and investigate changes caused by heating and cooling.
  Why it matters: Foundation of chemistry.

Catholic Religion (optional, for Catholic schools and families)

• Creed (G2)
  Who God is and what we believe at the grade2 level.
  Why it matters: Faith seeks understanding of the living God.

  Jesus gives Himself as food for the journey
  Why it matters: The Eucharist is the source and summit of Christian life.

  Why it matters: Mercy is the face of the Gospel.

• Liturgical Life (G2)

  Why it matters: The liturgy makes present the mystery of Christ.
